From the Publisher
Broad in scope and objective in coverage, this progressive text examines the techniques and applications of today's educational tests and measurements--both traditional and non-traditional-- and discusses recent developments in integrating assessment and instruction at the classroom level.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

The goal of Educational Assessment of Students, Third Edition, is to help teachers and teachers in training to improve instruction through better assessment of students. It focuses directly on the professional practices of elementary and secondary schoolteachers. It is a core text written for a first course in educational testing and constructing classroom assessments. It serves equally as the textbook for an undergraduate course or a first graduate course in educational assessment. No formal course work in statistics or college mathematics is necessary to understand the text.

In preparing this edition, a new effort was made to make it easy for the reader to apply the material to classroom practice through clear explanations, many practical examples and illustrations, checklists, and step-by-step how-to instructions. As with previous editions, I have written the text from the viewpoint that teaching and assessment should blend together. To help students with real-world experiences, Internet website addresses have been added throughout to help students to quickly link to examples and resources outside the text.

The book covers basic concepts as well as a complete treatment of educational assessment—from developing plans that integrate teaching and assessment; to crafting objective, performance, and portfolio assessments; to evaluating students and discussing evaluations with parents; to interpreting state-mandated tests and standardized achievement tests.

It is important in a first course that students receive a balanced treatment of the topics. Thus, both the strengths and limitations of each assessment technique are explained. Research is cited that supports or refutes assessment and teaching practices.

This edition focuses more dearly on classroom assessment than the previous edition. Each chapter was revised with the goal of making the material more relevant to the practical issues teachers face. For example, mandated state programs have placed more emphasis on teachers aligning their classroom practices and assessments with state content and performance standards. In each chapter, I integrate suggestions for how to accomplish this alignment.

The book treats teachers as professionals. It recognizes that teachers' experiences and judgments are necessary for proper and valid use of educational assessment. I do not hesitate to point out teachers' erroneous judgments and assessment abuses, however, where good lessons can be learned from them. To ensure that the text material is in keeping with the competencies and standards held to be important by the profession, each chapter is keyed to the American Federation of Teachers, the National Council on Measurement in Education, and the National Education Association Standards for Teacher Competence in Educational Assessment of Students (reproduced in Appendix A). Organization of the Text

As in the previous edition, this book is organized into three parts. Part One provides the foundation for classroom assessment. Part Two centers on how to plan and craft classroom assessments. Part Three discusses how to interpret and use standardized tests.

Each chapter begins with a list of learning targets that the reader should attain. Each learning target is keyed to the Standards for Teacher Competence in Educational Assessment of Students. Following the body of each chapter is a summary in list form to help the reader recall information. Each chapter concludes with a list of important concepts and terms, a set of exercises and discussion questions, and a brief annotated list of additional readings. Many of the exercises at the end of the chapters are performance tasks. These require applying and extending the principles taught in the chapter. Readers are often encouraged to compare their exercise results with those of others in the course to obtain greater insight into a topic. Instructors can use these exercises as a basis for in-class activities.

Part I, The Bases for Assessment in the Classroom, contains five chapters presenting the foundations for educational assessment. Chapter 1 discusses classroom decision making and how assessments help to improve it. It provides a brief overview of the assessment landscape, so the reader can see the broader picture of educational assessment before delving into specifics. Chapter 2 discusses goals and learning targets of classroom instruction. The chapter is simplified in this edition by presenting fewer cognitive taxonomies than the previous edition. New to this edition is a discussion of how state standards can be used to develop classroom teaming targets for day-to-day teaching. Chapter 3 discusses the validity of assessment results. The chapter has been simplified to focus exclusively on the current conceptions of validity held by the profession. One part of the chapter focuses exclusively on the validity of the results of teacher-crafted assessments, the other on the validity of other assessment results a teacher and a school will use. Chapter 4 describes reliability. The order of presentation of the topics has been improved to make the material flow better for the reader. Chapter 5 discusses teachers', students', and administrators' ethical responsibilities and uses of assessments. It applies the National Council on Measurement in Education's Code of Professional Responsibilities in Educational Measurement (reproduced in Appendix C) as an organizational framework. Also, this chapter describes legal issues regarding assessment and how assessments can be made to validly accommodate mainstreamed learners.

Part II, Crafting and Using Classroom Assessments, demonstrates how a teacher uses artistry and functionality to produce useful teaching tools. The ten chapters in this part provide complete coverage of how to craft virtually all types of assessments a teacher may need to use. Chapter 6 has been extensively rewritten to show clearly how teaching, assessing, and grading fit together. There are new examples showing how several different methods of assessment can be integrated into lesson plans, be matched with assessment purpose, and provide formative and summative assessment throughout an instructional unit. Chapter 7 discusses completion and true-false items, including multiple true-false items. Chapter 8 discusses how to craft multiple-choice and matching exercises. In this edition, material on alternative formats of objective items, such as masterlist and tabular matching exercises, have been integrated into this chapter. Chapter 9 focuses on crafting and marking essay items. Chapter 10 is devoted to assessing higher-order thinking skills, including problem solving and critical thinking. The presentation is simplified from the previous edition.

Two chapters are devoted to alternative and performance assessments in schools. Chapter 11 describes the basic concepts and major components of authentic and performance assessments. It surveys the many different types of performance assessments and projects that are currently used in schools. New to this edition is classroom assessment using the Multiple Intelligences Theory framework. Chapter 12 focuses exclusively on crafting and evaluating performance assessments and portfolios. The chapter shows how to craft the tasks, scoring rubrics, and rating scales necessary to produce valid results. The chapter applies the Dimensions of Learning Model as a framework for performance assessment design. Different methods of crafting rubrics are discussed. Chapter 13 focuses entirely on format, informal classroom assessment for purposes of diagnosing why a student is having difficulty learning. It shows how six different diagnostic assessment approaches may be integrated into the teaching process. Chapter 14 has been simplified, but is still about administering assessments, helping students do their best on assessments, and improving assessment tasks through item analysis. Item analysis for open-response items is new in this edition.

Chapter 15 has been extensively rewritten. It is organized in five major sections. Section One provides background for grading including grading and continuous assessment, formative and summative student assessment, and how various stakeholders use grades. Section Two presents various options that schools use to report student progress, including report cards, parent-teacher conferences, and—new to this edition—narrative reports. Section Three focuses on sensible grading practices that result in valid summative grades for students. The chapter provides teachers with the tools for creating a grading philosophy that is logically consistent with both their teaching approach and their purposes for assessing students. The tools integrate all the planning considerations discussed in earlier chapters. As a result, teachers can use a coherent and sensible grading model. Linking grades to teaching and assessment plans; and discussions of special problems in grading, such as using zeros and the unclear meaning of failure, are new to this edition. Section Five shows how to set grade boundaries and combine scores

Must have reference book
By TCerrillo
This book is a "must-have" resource for anyone who has an interest in testing and assessment. I am a psychometrican, and it is a widely used resource among our psychometrics staff, as well as, with our measurement consultants and assessment specialists. It provides a comprehensive background into test reliability and validity. In addition, it presents many helpful tools for constructing all types of items. The checklists are especially beneficial, as well as, the chapter on interpreting score reports. Because the book is so comprehensive, it may best be used as guidebook and/ or reference book, rather than a book that one would read from cover to cover in the hopes to digest it all. I cannot say how many times I have referred back to this book in both my educational and professional life. I believe that it is written on a level that is relatively easy to follow, and the numerous examples that he provides help to illustrate the material. It is the most comprehensive book of it's kind in the field of educational assessment. I am also a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and many students that I worked with during my doctoral study there also hold an opinion similar to mine. If the book is used in the way that it is intended to be used, it will probably be one of the most used reference books in your educational assessment library.

From Publishers Weekly
Early cave paintings show Stone Agers plucking out facial hair with sea shells, suggesting that the decision to grow or not grow a beard is almost as old as human society itself. Allan Peterkin's One Thousand Beards: A Cultural History of Facial Hair traces the beard's (and the razor's) storied past, including styles, regulations and cultural significance from the ancient Egyptians to the present day. The breezy and concise illustrated volume also covers the various religious meanings of beards, facial hair in gay culture, bearded ladies and the beard as interpreted by Freud. Peterkin includes instructions for washing, dying, trimming and shaving all kinds of beards from Amish-style to the Franz Josef.

A MUST READ FOR EVERY BEARDED MAN OR EVERY MAN THINKING OF GROWING A BEARD
By Steve Horwitz
Allan Peterkin is a genius and great historian. In order to write a book related to a cultural history of facial hair takes passion and commitment.

I just finished reading this book and found it fascinating, enlightening, educational, and historical. ONE THOUSAND BEARDS also had a brilliant editor. The content follows a pattern organizational content put together beautifully from the introduction to the bibliography.

Allan Peterkin gave me the opportunity to look up certain words that I did not know the meanings of. However, I completed reading the book first and underlined parts of its vocabulary. Instead of using the dictionary during my reading, I waited until I waited until I was finished digesting the entire content of ONE THOUSAND BEARDS.

This is not a four star book. It is worth ten stars. Forget about the 1992 publishing date. ONE THOUSAND BEARDS is current, to the point, and an incredible read.

I was so impressed with this book; I would consider it an honor if I could get my copy autographed by the author. Hopefully if Allan Peterkin reads my review he will contact me through Amazon and make my wish a reality.

I have a great deal of respect for its author. The only thing left to say is congratulations.

History, meaning, and how-to
By Eileen G.
Psychiatrist and writer Allan Peterkin has a playful and curious mind, and an obvious love of research. His past wanderings have taken him into the vagaries and varieties of the language of erotics, which he tackled enthusiastically - with a thesaurus, no less. The subject of beards is one that he admits he had never given much thought until one morning a few years ago.
His interest was piqued, he says in his introduction to this delightful book, in "one of those perverse moments of inspiration." Walking to work in downtown Toronto, "rather than indulging my own thoughts as usual," he started noticing faces, and he then noticed that more than a third of the males were in some fashion bearded, soul patched, sideburned, mustachioed - and so it began. He wanted to uncover the meanings of facial hair, the "unconscious reasons" that men grew and tended beards, and even the "ritualistic symbolism of shaving." He wondered what women thought about beards. His survey expanded to his colleagues, his psychotherapy patients, and strap-hangers on the Toronto subway. (You might guess that he asked his friends, too.) He was off and running.
This marvelous and generously-illustrated book is the result of his considerable ability to tackle his subject with energy, brainpower, humor and a sense of fun. It's a documentary, a history, a survey, an appreciation, and a catalogue. There are hundreds of black and white illustrations, and topical quotations from famous and not so famous beard-wearers. Chapter 6 deals with the (usually) unwanted thing: "The Feminine Beard." The compulsory beard (the Taliban being a recent and dramatic example of mandatory beardedness) is examined, too - in a chapter on religious beards. There's a "Timeline of Queer Facial Hair" among other remarkable bits of information in the chapter "The Gay Beard."
Facial hair's inevitable products and labors (shaving cream, razors, clippers, trimmers, and more) are included. Chapter 13, "The Personal Beard: Grooming Strategies" is a sort of owner's manual. If Great-grand-dad is no longer around to show you how to strop a razor, you can use Peterkin's instructions.
There are a lot of useful addresses and websites listed at this book's end (even "Where to Order False Facial Hair" should you need some), an extensive bibliography but, unfortunately, no index. Nonetheless this is a delightful book that is comprehensive and smart - and also a lot of fun. I know that I won't look at or think about facial hair in quite the same way ever again.

Tales of Cthulhu Invictus: Nine Stories of Battling The Cthulhu Mythos in Ancient Rome, by William Meikle, Christine Morgan, Konstantine P

Long before ivy grew on the walls of Miskatonic University or the Deep Ones first came to Innsmouth, centuries before the mad Arab penned the dreaded Necronomicon, the malevolent powers of the Cthulhu Mythos plagued mankind. During the Age of the Antonines (96 AD–192 AD), when the Roman Empire was at the peak of its power, dark and unknowable forces were at work. Ancient wizards sought ways to cheat death, explorers stumbled on the remnants of alien civilizations, foul cults practiced unholy rites, and inhuman creatures sought to mix their blood with ours.
Across Rome's vast empire, a few brave men and women rose up to meet these threats for the greater good of mankind. They carried light into the darkness, dispelling a poisonous taint which grows best in the shadows. With steel and spell and burning torch, these heroic investigators of the ancient world defended their civilization from the fearsome powers of the Cthulhu Mythos. Golden Goblin Press is proud to offer up nine tales of their horrific struggles and sacrifices.

OVERALL GRADE: B plus.
By MISTER SJEM
This set of 9 stories was a stretch goal for a recent Kickstarter connected with the Cthulhu Invictus tabletop RPG. It generally encompasses people of Ancient Rome encountering the Mythos.

All are somewhat good or better in quality.

My top three: Vulcan's Forge, Lines in the Sand & The Seven Thunders.

Very cool Cthulhu/Rome mashup
By Jason Golomb

"She shivers. She is cold, and she shivers, despite the blanket that wraps her, despite her mother’s enfolding arms.
It is not the fever, but the place.
A place that feels… old.
Old when Rome was young. Old when the she-wolf gave suckle to Romulus and Remus. Old… beyond old. Ancient, and wrong."
-from Fecunditati Augustae by Christine Morgan

Tales of Cthulhu Invictus adds nine new stories to the large anthology subgenre of the Cthulhu mythos built upon the cosmic horror foundations laid by H.P. Lovecraft. This collection, edited by the accomplished Brian M. Sammons, has several very good stories by a collection of experienced writers. All fit well within the Cthulhu and Lovecraftian themes, though only a few effectively utilize the Roman place-and-time as an embedded enhancement rather than mere historical window dressing.
Below you’ll find very brief summaries and quotes from each of the stories. These aren’t in their exact order from the anthology, but are loosely ranked in order of my favorites.

"Fecunditati Augustae" by Christine Morgan
Empress Faustina is tormented by her inability to give Emperor Marcus Aurelias male heirs. She turns to dark magic to ensure her fertility, though not her children’s health. Morgan has a beautiful turn of phrase and does the best job of building Lovecraftian tension while providing effective hints of the otherworldly horrors. The characters have depth and dimension and, at only 15 pages long, the plot thoroughly embeds itself in its roman historical connections. I really love Morgan’s language and look forward to reading more from her.
"Seized and held. Roughly turned. Upended over a bony, knobby knee. The world tips as if it will spill out, sloshing like a rocked jar or amphora. The tough, callused heel of a hard hand strikes her a firm blow to the back. She utters a bleat of her own, a hideous glottal expulsion. Her throat opens and now she is the sloshing jar, the rocked amphora, contents emptying in a liquid splatter."

"Vulcan’s Forge" by William Meikle
This story explores the idea that the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. may have been more than a simple issue of geophysical forces, but perhaps purposefully triggered to protect the world from a long ancient evil, primed to unleash its fury on the human race. Ancient explorers discover a mechanism deep within the volcano and find clues to its history.
"One thing is certain — it was designed and built by a race long since lost to man — a race of giant intellect so far above ours that we would be mere insects under their boots should they return."

Plague of Wounds by Konstantine Paradias
"I sleep in a corner in one of the back rooms of the Synagogue, miraculously left unscathed by the fire. The wound itches and breaks out into a stream of words, its lips flapping together like gums, its tongue lolling. In Greek and Aramaic and Latin and its own nonsense language, it foretells of the terrible doom that will befall the world."
This terrific story is of rabbi wrought by an unholy plague, that manifests itself within his own body. He sells out his fellow man to protect his family, but when faced with selling out humanity, he has his soul’s redemption at stake.

"Lines in the Sand" by Tom Lynch
An attempted murder and a cursed dagger drags former Legionary Caius out of his comfortable retirement and into battle with The King in Yellow – a character upon whom Lovecraft built components of his stories.

"As a Roman cohort stood against an army of unidentifiable creates, they saw: Towers taller than the grandest in Rome floated into view behind the opposing army. Through a haze, over a distant lake, lofty towers pulled the entire cohort’s focus. Everyone watched as the ethereal edifices board towards the sky, until something… changed. Faces feel as the beauty began to fade. Columns cracked, facades crumbled, and friezes fell.
The figure in the lead had turned away, gazing back at this domain, and as it began to fade, fall, and decay, his shoulders dropped and his head fell forward. Caius could feel the torment flowing from the enemy. The anguish twisted into anger, then raging fury. The leader brought his head up."

"The Temple of Iald-T’quthoth" by Lee Clark Zumpe
Another strong story that’s much more lurid and sanguine than the others, and effectively blends the historical place and time with the Lovecraftian themes.
A killer, crucified outside the walls of Jerusalem dies horribly as the cross settles into its base:

"… the crown of Jaddus’ skull burst wide open, its gory content spurting through the air. The think, viscid substance — a repugnant mix of brain, blood and gore — rained down on those soldiers ill-starred enough to be in close proximity. From the oozing, shattered husk of Jaddus’ head, a black swarm of small winged things, unseated from their next, took flight with much commotion, congregating briefly in burgeoning shadowy cloud that resembled and impossibly gargantuan monster."

Over the next decade, each infected Legionary dies. Quintus knows he’s the last and leads the investigators to a cult leader… who’s a surprise to the characters, though much less so to the readers.

The text remains an historical introduction to the humanities from which the reader will gain a basic familiarity with major styles and their implications as well as a sense of the historical development of individual arts disciplines. The major focus of the text is still the arts and their interrelationships. Another emphasis fundamental to the book also remains: an emphasis, by example, on the formal analysis of works of art, which supplements discussion of them. By including several such analyses, I aim for students to infer how to see, hear, read, and put into words what makes a particular work of art tick, so to speak. Developing confidence in relating and responding to works of art, both verbally and viscerally, allows students to carry their interest in the arts beyond the confines of the classroom and the timeframe of the course into the rest of their lives. That lifelong relationship with the arts forms the purpose of introductory humanities courses. When encountering an artwork for the first time we often lack access to biographical or contextual materials. We have only the artwork and the ability to confront it, either with or without confidence. Thus, the analyses, which examine how art works in terms of line, form, color, melody, plot, and so on, provide a means by which people can approach, respond to, and share artworks in an on-the-spot manner; the way we encounter works of art in real life. Several important changes have been made in this edition. More than sixty new illustrations and maps and a number of new literature extracts have been added. With illustrations of works such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude¿s The Gates, ¿new¿-media artist Simon Penny¿s interactive ¿Big Father,¿ the Burj Dubai, and movie stills from Shrek 2 and Ocean¿s 11 (all in Chapter 17), students can experience and feel compatible with the arts of their own time. The Music for the Humanities CD has been fully integrated into the text, and each selection now has an accompanying discussion. Granting the reader easy access to the music described by the text, a CD icon now appears in the book whenever a selection is mentioned. The ¿Masterwork¿ features have been linked thematically to enhance connectivity among periods and chapters. For instance, the theme ¿Heroes¿ links discussion of Homer¿s Iliad with Sophocles¿ Oedipus the King and Shakespeare¿s Hamlet; ¿The Human Form¿ links the Tell Asmar statues with Myron¿s Discobolus and Michelangelo¿s David; ¿The Dome¿ links the Pantheon with Hagia Sophia, Florence¿s Duomo, and London¿s St Paul¿s Cathedral. Each Masterwork relates to several Masterworks in other chapters. As a result, the reader¿s consideration of these works of art expands to different examples and different eras. Based on popular request from reviewers, there are new sections on modern and contemporary topics including photography, jazz, and digital media. New material on photography appears in Chapters 15, 16, and 17. In addition, discussions of jazz have been greatly enhanced in Chapters 16 and 17. An entirely new section on digital media (¿new¿-media) appears in Chapter 17. In the Introduction, the discussion of criticism has been revised to consider meaning and to improve comprehension. Finally, the Further Reading section has been updated so that those who wish to delve more deeply into the material covered in the text will have up-to-date authorities to consult. Much of the planning and many of the specific changes for this revision were based on the observations and expressed needs of humanities instructors and users of the book from around the country. The following individuals, to whom I am very grateful, undertook a detailed, line-by-line review of the seventh edition of The Creative Impulse, and their suggestions provided a solid springboard for the preparation of the eighth edition. My thanks go to Linda Pastryk; Helen Barnes of Butler Community College, El Dorado; Karen Buttitta, Emerita of Ward Melville High School, East Setauket; Claire Ellis of Inver Hills Community College, Inver Grove Heights; Amy Hickman of Collins College, Phoenix; Aditi Samarth of Richland College, Dallas; and Joyce Kerr Tarpley of Mountain View College, Dallas. I have done my best to incorporate their helpful suggestions in this edition, hoping for the result of increased accuracy, clarity, and immediacy.Dennis J. Does what is should...

I had to buy this book for an introductory art class. I feel like it is very clear and concise regarding the topics, but at times feel like these is a bit more history than art. It does what it is meant to do, but I wouldnt really say that it was "inspiring" in any way.

The Father of Spin: Edward L. Bernays and The Birth of Public Relations, by Larry Tye

The Father of Spin is the first full-length biography of the legendary Edward L. Bernays, who, beginning in the 1920s, was one of the first and most successful practioners of the art of public relations. In this engrossing biography, Larry Tye uses Bernays's life as a prism to understand the evolution of the craft of public relations and how it came to play such a critical-and sometimes insidious-role in American life.

Drawing on interviews with primary sources and voluminous private papers, Tye presents a fascinating and revealing portrait of the man who, more than any other, defined and personified public relations, a profession that today helps shape our political discourse and define our commercial choices.

Amazon.com Review
Biographer Larry Tye can't help but be entertained by his subject's professional antics. Edward L. Bernays (1892-1995), a pioneering practitioner of public relations, zestfully ballyhooed his clients, utilizing a shrewd blend of publicity stunts, careful cultivation of the press, and solicited endorsements from "experts." Yet journalist Tye is also aware of the moral ambiguities inherent in the career of a man who vigorously promoted cigarette smoking and whose work for the United Fruit Company played at least some role in the 1954 military overthrow of Guatemala's democratically elected government. This judicious book balances appreciation for Bernays' inventiveness with a sober understanding of its consequences, including the extent to which PR permeates contemporary American life. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
Dubbed the "Prince of Puff" and the "Baron of Ballyhoo," Edward L. Bernays, who died in 1995 at the age of 103, was arguably the most influential publicist of the 20th century. The nephew of Sigmund Freud, Bernays brought an astute grasp of human behavior to the nascent field of public relations, opening his own PR firm in 1919 and launching celebrated publicity campaigns for American Tobacco, Ivory Soap, United Fruit, book publishers, manufacturers of eggs and bacon and the platforms of presidents from Coolidge to Eisenhower. In this comprehensive biography, Tye, a Boston Globe reporter, attributes Bernay's success to a marketing philosophy that he terms "Big Think," which combined high-concept publicity stunts, endorsements from doctors, national surveys and other forms of publicity whose actual product endorsement was cleverly veiled. To promote Lucky Strike cigarettes among women in an age in which smoking in public was still outre, for example, he arranged for a parade of smoking debutantes to march down Fifth Avenue. To market Ivory soap, he created a hugely popular national soap-sculpting contest. A domineering and self-absorbed man who never missed a chance to promote himself ("in an era of mass communication," he often remarked, "modesty is a private virtue and a public fault"), Bernays eventually became a pariah in the industry that he helped to create. At times, Tye too blithely credits Bernays for shaping events and product success, rather than seeing his work as only one part of the welter of mass media manipulations that have long since transformed American life. But Tye succeeds in piercing the rapidly spinning mythology that perpetually surrounded the man who, he convincingly argues, pioneered the modern science of spin.

From Library Journal
The hyperbolic modern world of mass culture, constant polling, and spin cycles got its start in the 1920s with the exploits of Edward Bernays, the "father of public relations." So claims Boston Globe journalist Tye, whose entertaining study combines a healthy jadedness about media manipulation with a fondness for his pioneer subject. Armed with a few of his uncle Sigmund Freud's insights, Bernays stoked the fires of the mass id, "crystallizing public opinion" for 435 clients ranging from Enrico Caruso to General Electric, Calvin Coolidge to Ivory Soap. To encourage women to smoke publicly, he sent a parade of them puffing down Fifth Avenue on Easter 1929. He popularized the "expert" survey, staged news events, planted stories, and created charitable-sounding business commissions. For the United Fruit Company in the 1950s he even helped topple the leftist government of Guatemala. Tye's book ably follows Bernays's ever-widening stunts, from his World War I enlistment work through the transforming decades to his death in 1995. Recommended for all history and business collections.ANathan Ward, "Library Journal"

Thinking vs. swallowing
By A Customer
Tye is accused of not offering a definitive judgment of Bernays because he offers too much "one the one hand" and "other hand" descriptions. Others feel the story should have been more chronological. I think these criticisms reflect the readers' problems rather than Tye's. I am interested in coming to my own conclusions, and Tye's descriptions and topical arrangements help me do that. I do not want to merely swallow a biographer's perspective without also considering other material about the person and the topic in general -- books such as Ewen's and other material. This is a fascinating story told well and offers a useful focus on one aspect of a much larger issue, which is how we are constructed as consumers and voters in late 20th century America.

What every PR person should know....
By vcruz@mediaone.net
Tye's book is a must-read for any self-respecting PR wizard. How Bernays was able to engineer PR strategies for such diverse products as books and bananas, from Mack trucks to Lucky Strikes and even foreign countries, is ingenious and artful. His creativity hath no bounds. He elevated the practice to a social science, and build roads for the profession. He drafted a historical argument, outlining 5 stages of PR history in America, the last stage being the most interesting to me. This was the "Period of Mutual Understanding," quote: "a time when PR came to mean 'not a one-way street for giving information to the public for our clients but rather one of interpreting the public to the client as a basis for their action and, after the action had been carried out, interpreting the client to the public.'" If only all of us could be so articulate with our clients! Entertaining accounts on how he performed the craft (i.e., selling books by selling builders on the inclusion of book shelves in new homes)and his allegiance to "Big Think," were my favorate parts and I could not hear enough about them. The book explores the complex, contradictory nature he possessed and a surprise revelation in the end (and at the end of Bernay's life), will have you spellbound in disbelief.

Review
"Because The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is grounded in a timeless wisdom, it speaks to its readers and viewers on both a universal and personal level. Dr. Morena shows the story to be what Baum could hardly have imagined it becoming: a guidebook to our inner journey through the enchanted land of Oz and home again."
—John Algeo, President of Theosophical Society in America

From the Publisher
This is an exciting time for Oz lovers with the re-release of The Wizard of Oz movie and the 100 year anniversary of the book's publication. Coinciding with the renewed interest in Oz, L. Frank Baum's great-granddaughter, Dr. Gita Dorothy Morena, has recently published a new book, "The Wisdom of Oz". Not only does she embody the Oz heroine with her given name Dorothy, she sheds light on her great grandfather's beloved tale with her years of experience as a psychotherapist and meditation leader. She offers a unique and personal way to explore the fairy tale by encouraging Oz lovers to explore the twists and turns of their own "yellow brick roads."

"The Wisdom of Oz" shows how Baum's fairy tale is a powerful metaphor for psychological healing and spiritual transformation. Not only does it stimulate Oz lovers to explore their fascination with the story, it also examines how a feminine heroine heals wounded aspects of the psyche, and sheds light on how Dorothy's image contributes to the emergence of feminine values in the culture. Personal examples reveal how the symbolic images and lessons in the story manifest in a person's life. In a recent TV Guide interview, Oprah Winfrey spoke about her interest in Oz with great conviction: "Although I meditate every day and I pray every night and I read spiritual material, my greatest spiritual teaching is "The Wizard of Oz." 'You've always had the power, my dear. You've always had the power.' That Good Witch, she's my girl!"

Fast paced living and the rapid development of technology have left many people questioning their values and lifestyles. During such stressful times, literature and mythology often become beacons for clarification and guidance. In the symbolic language of fairy tale, L. Frank Baum's classic, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" addresses an underlying uneasiness that was just beginning to permeate the culture when it was written one hundred years ago. With the help of "The Wisdom of Oz", people can see from its imagery how to navigate successfully through a variety of disturbing situations to fine the way home. It appears at an auspicious time, heralding our entrance into a new millennium.

Misled on the Yellow Brick Road
By K. Murray-Purcell
I found that Morena has misled her readers into thinking that this is a book about OZ; especially since she is a relative of the creator. But it really talks about her interest in play/sandbox therapy. I am not interested in that so I felt disappointed with the book.

Brilliantly insightful interpretation of the classic Oz tale
By L. Nokes
This book came to me at a crossroads in my own life, at a time when I was experiencing my own personal journey to find the metaphorical `home', which paralleled Dorothy's journey in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I was so moved by Gita Morena's brilliantly insightful interpretation of the Oz story that I contacted her, and traveled across the country twice to attend meditation retreats that she led. The wisdom she brings to the interpretation of the Oz story is profound, inspirational and life-enhancing.

As great-granddaughter of Oz author L. Frank Baum, Dr. Morena brings a unique perspective to the interpretation of the Oz story in her masterfully written book. She begins by sharing her family history and setting the stage by showing how Baum's tale addressed numerous social, cultural and political issues in late 19th century America, when it was written. Dr. Morena is also a PhD Jungian psychologist who embraces Eastern philosophy, and it is this perspective that enables her to bring clarity to the true meaning of Dorothy's journey.

At some point in most every life, the proverbial `cyclone' hits out of the blue in the form of a major and unexpected upheaval. For those who allow their path to unfold, this `cyclone' represents the beginning of a sacred journey towards our true `home', which, as Dorothy learned, is the undiscovered or untapped resources we all possess, and the very "essence of who we are". Each character in Oz actually symbolizes an aspect of ourselves that must be acknowledged, developed and integrated into the whole. The Scarecrow represents wisdom, the Tin Woodman represents compassion, the Cowardly Lion represents courage, and Toto represents the intuitive or instinctual energy we each possess. Even the Wicked Witch represents the "shadow" or dark and repressed side of ourselves that we may not want to face, but must be addressed in order to find `home'. Dorothy's journey has several distinct phases and contains many challenges, paralleling our human journey along our own yellow brick road in life. We must also learn as Dorothy did that there really are no magical "Wizards" who can rescue us and send us home - we must do this for ourselves. In her book, Dr. Morena also shares her own very personal journey, which parallels Dorothy's. It is through facing the challenges in life's journey that we develop our own wisdom, compassion, courage and intuition, and find our own way `home'. As Dorothy realizes at the end of the story, she already has everything she needs inside of her.

The Oz characters and the journey along the yellow brick road touch a deep chord in many readers, and have become powerful metaphorical symbols in our culture. Dr. Morena illustrates this point using examples from the "sandplay" portion of her psychotherapy practice. Clients are guided to create scenes in a type of sandbox, choosing several of thousands of small figures available. As with art, music or poetry, these scenes help express important aspects of the inner self and the personal journey that a person may not be able to express in words. Time after time Dr. Morena's clients are drawn to use Oz characters or to create a yellow brick road in the sand, thus demonstrating how these characters do represent aspects of ourselves that must be acknowledged, developed, and/or integrated into the self. It is quite fascinating.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a deeper look at this classic tale, and how its symbolic imagery can illuminate aspects of every human journey.
