About the Author

Dr. HANIPH A. LATCHMAN is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. A Rhodes Scholar and Senior Member of the IEEE, Dr. Latchman is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and has published over 180 technical articles and four books in the areas of control and communication systems and networks.

Dr. SRINIVAS KATAR is Principal Engineer at Qualcomm Atheros, Inc. and has extensively contributed to the development of HomePlug AV, IEEE 1901, HomePlug Green PHY, and the HomePlug AV2 standards. He is an inventor of more than fifty issued and pending patents.

Lawrence W. Yonge III is Senior Director of Technology for Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., chairs the HomePlug Technical Working Group, and is an inventor of approximately 100 U.S. patents issued and pending.

SHERMAN GAVETTE was a Principal Scientist for Sharp Laboratories of America prior to retiring. While at Sharp Labs, he was a member of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance board of directors and was vice-chair of the HomePlug AV Specification working group.

If you are into HomePlug AV this is the must-have book.

This book authored by a group of academics and Qualcomm employees. They set themselves the goal to provide "a clear and simple overview of key features of the HomePlug AV specification and the associated IEEE 1901 standard". Bringing clarity and simplicity into a complex specification is a tall order, and indeed the authors descend into the acronym-laden details. (The acronyms are listed and referenced in the Appendix.)
The structure of the book is quite logical, working through the layers and "planes" that make up the HomePlug specification, starting with the physical layer and ending with network formation and security. Two more chapters are dedicated to MAC features and Management Messages. Finally the book is rounded with concluding chapters, each a dozen or so pages long, on both HomePlug Green PHY™ and the next generation HomePlug AV 2.
If you are into HomePlug AV this is the must-have book.

About the Author

Carlette Jackson Hardin is Professor of Education at Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee.  She currently serves as Interim Dean for the College of Education.  Dr. Hardin has degrees from Austin Peay State University (B.S., and M.S.) and Vanderbilt (Ed.D.). Dr. Hardin has been active in professional organizations at the state and national level, having served as President of the National Association for Developmental Education.  Dr. Hardin has given over 100 keynote addresses, presentations, and workshops at state, regional, and national conferences. 

 

Since 1981, Dr. Hardin has had numerous professional publications and funded grants. Dr. Hardin and Dr. Ann Harris have written a fastback, Managing Classroom Crises for Phi Delta Kappa which was published Spring, 2000.  An orientation textbook for adult students, 100 Things Every Adult Student Ought to Know, was published in February 2000 by Cambridge Press.   She co-authored Capturing Change: Globalizing the Curriculum through Technology, published by Rowman and Littlefield Education.  Her most publication is a monograph published by Phi Delta Kappa, Making the Most of Student Teaching.

A friend, who knew I was writing this text, recently shared a textbook used by her aunt when she was training to be a teacher in the 1930s. The text, Classroom Organization and Control by Jesse Sears, was published in 1928 and left little doubt about the role of the teacher, with chapters devoted to order, discipline, and punishments. The text was a reminder of how much classroom management has changed in the last 70 years. The text from the 1930s is a far cry from many current classroom-management texts that focus less on teacher-centered control and punishment and more on building communities and creating safe learning environments.

The purpose of Effective Classroom Management: Models and Strategies for Today's Classrooms is to provide a synthesis of these changing views of classroom management. The text presents 12 models of classroom management that fall into three distinct categories: Classroom Management as Discipline, Classroom Management as a System, and Classroom Management as Instruction. This book is a scholarly review of the research base on classroom management. However, it is written and formatted in a way that is easy for students to read, understand, and apply.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

Effective Classroom Management: Models and Strategies for Today's Classrooms is especially appropriate as the sole text for an undergraduate or graduate course on classroom management. In addition, it may be used for staff-development programs for inservice teachers. This text provides a foundation for selecting a model to follow or for the development of an individual classroom-management plan. The content is applicable for teachers and preservice teachers at all levels—elementary, middle, and high school.

ORGANIZATION

Chapter 1 provides the theoretical framework of the text, in which a rationale is given for considering classroom management as discipline, as a system, or as instruction. The chapter presents a brief review of the major research in the field, and ends with a discussion of how individual management plans are developed.

Part 1. Classroom Management as Discipline presents four models of classroom management. Chapter 2 presents basic behavioral concepts, including a review of B. F. Skinner's theory of operant conditioning. Lee and Marlene Canter's model, Assertive Discipline, is presented in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 provides a different approach to using behavioral theory in Fredric Jones's model, Positive Classroom Discipline. Chapter 5 presents the work of two theorists, Rudolf Dreikurs and Linda Albert.

Part II. Classroom Management as a System highlights four models that are systematic in approach. The changing theories of William Glasser are the focus of Chapter 6. Chapter 7 presents Richard Curwin and Allen Mendler's model, Discipline with Dignity. Chapter 8 focuses on building communities and discusses the theories of Haim Ginott and Alfie Kohn. The research of Carolyn Evertson is the foundation of her model, Classroom Organization and Management Program (COMP), which is presented in Chapter 9.

Part III. Classroom Management as Instruction provides four models that have the teaching of prosocial skills as their central focus. The first model, presented in Chapter 10, is Barbara Coloroso's Inner Discipline. Chapter 11 reviews Ellen McGinnis and Arnold Goldstein's model, Skillstreaming. Several approaches to teaching conflict resolution and peer mediation are presented in Chapter 12. Finally, Forrest Gathercoal's model, Judicious Discipline, is the focus of Chapter 13.

Part IV. Developing a Personal System provides information to assist the teacher in designing a personal system of classroom management. Chapter 14 provides information for creating a safe learning environment for all students and explores issues related to multicultural and socioeconomic factors, physical and mental disabilities, and at-risk behaviors. Chapter 15 helps the individual teacher combine all elements of classroom management into a comprehensive program.

This book is fantastic! They actually give some ideas and information on what may or may not work in the classroom. It is not a dictated do all end all type of book. It recognizes that each class is different and to try different things. Excellent book for a First year teacher or a seasoned teacher.

This well written book details several behavior management models.

This author consulted some very good and extensive references that I may go to in the future. I value this book even more for the list of references in it. This book is well written and well documented. Read this book if you could benefit from learning about effective classroom management, and notice the professional feel of this book.

Do as I sat, NOT as I do

This book is great for explaining to new teachers different ways that teachers use to manage a classroom. But it breaks some of its own "rules". For example, it says that a teacher should not have a list of "do not"s but that teachers should phrase them in positive ways ("do"s). Then it goes on to list about 50 things a teacher should never do. It add humor to the class discussion.

John B. Judis was a senior editor of "The New Republic" and recently a senior writer for "The National Journal." Bush Could Learn from Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson" (Scribner, 2004), "The Emerging Democratic Majority" with Ruy Teixeira (Scribner, 2002), and "The Paradox of American Democracy: Elites, Special Interests, and Betrayal of Public Trust" (Pantheon, 2000). With the recent tense US elections, many labels describing opponents have been applied to both Democrats and Republicans without really understanding the underlying motivations driving the shift by voters to oppose establishment candidates, both within the US and in the EU. This refreshing overview provides helpful context of historical populist movements, and how we might see the new situations playing out around the world today. Thought-provoking read, recommended for those who are ready to move beyond condescending labels to solve real problems.

Nationalism is not Fascism, it's so much more.

Like many of you I thought when a new President of the United States was elected that would be the end of the constant barrage of campaign news and the recriminations, back biting, and attack ads. I was wrong.

Hillary's loss has become every United States citizen's problem because we failed to elect a woman, because we failed to hand the country over to the Democrats and their agenda lock, stock, and barrel, and because politicians of Republican and Democratic stripe do not understand why Donald Trump won. The mainstream media keep their corporate microscopes trained on Trump and Obama and the rioting and unrest while the public outcry of racists, xenophobes, anti-Muslim, anti-gay, anti-Hillary echo day and night. Protesters scream that Trump is not their President, the election was rigged, Hillary was robbed and reporters hype their anguish and rage, determinedly throwing gasoline and napalm on the fires where Trump is burned in effigy. None of them realize what has happened or why and most give in to their fear -- and their jubilation -- of the return of fascism and Nazi rule. Nothing could be further from the reality of what ended with Trump's election.

Had they read John B. Judis's The Populist Explosion they would know what happened and what is currently happening all over Europe as candidates like Trump step to the forefront of the rising tide of a populist movement that started around 1928 and has grown with greater force with every passing year.

Whatever your political affiliations, I recommend The Populist Explosion not only for its detailed examination of the rising populism but also because Populism and Fascism are not even close cousins in the political arena here in the United States or in Europe as Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders, and other populist leaders repudiate their roots and embrace the 21st century embodiment of the politics of the disenfranchised, dispossessed, nationalist middle class.

Hitler's brand of nationalism was colonialism, fascism with the ultimate goal of expanding Germany's borders, digging out from under the war reparations demanded of Germany at the end of World War I, and bringing back a sense of dignity and hope in the wake of the rising tide of communism. Franco in Spain and Mussolini in Italy followed suit determined to stamp out the communist menace that threatened their countries and their people. Since the Russian revolution, communism was spreading like a poisonous weed through Europe and Hitler was determined to halt the spread. Judis details the roots of populism and its spread from the United States, South America, and throughout Europe. The Populist Explosion answers all the questions of how and why Nationalism is gaining support and spreading into the enlightened, politically correct world of the European Union and the stated goal of a world with no borders and one government under one leader. Populism, and the modern version of Nationalism, is not Fascism nor do populist leaders want to expand their influence or their borders. What Le Pen, Wilders, and Trump want, and what their growing number of followers, the members of the ever shrinking middle class, is sovereignty, to maintain their countries' social, cultural, and economic identities and protect their borders from the massive immigration of aliens determined to destroy national identity and remake host countries in their own image, an image that is bent on destroying the cultural and social identity of the host governments.

Judis's clear prose and carefully researched history make The Populist Movement a must-read resource that will open your eyes and delineate not a return to the old world of intolerance and hate, but a new world where national pride and a stable, productive economy is the goal where the middle class is resurrected, revitalized, and renewed. I give the book 5/5 stars and suggest you read it twice and share it with everyone you meet.

The best of its kind, but info overlaps his first two books

This is the best how-to write a novel in 30 days guide, and gives you everything you need to crank out a 50,000 word rough draft with plenty of inspirational hand-holding AND nuts-and-bolts "rules" (I prefer the latter). That said, there is a substantial amount of overlap with Gerke's earlier 5-star how-to books, The First 50 Pages: Engage Agents, Editors and Readers, and Set Your Novel Up For Success and Plot Versus Character: A Balanced Approach to Writing Great Fiction, so this new book will be of less use to you if you already have those--unless you're still stuck.

Note that to use his included character personality creation system to its fullest, you'll also need a copy of Please Understand Me II: Temperament, Character, Intelligence. He gives a rough overview of it in this book (and his earlier Plot vs. Character). Not only is this system great at fleshing out how your characters see and react to the world you create for them, but take the personality test yourself and be amazed at how much you find out about why you are the way you are. It's not perfect, but it's still incredibly accurate and can change your life!

Jeff Gerke is one of the absolute best writing coaches I've ever read. He's easy to read, with a fun, casual tone. He doesn't talk down to you or use a ton of big words. He makes you want to learn, to get excited, and breaks each phase of writing your novel into bite-sized chunks he calls "victories." Because when you're feeling down, you can look back on all your victories and be encouraged, and know if you've gotten this far, you can certainly finish the darn thing. Also, Gerke keeps your expectations reasonable. He says don't expect a masterpiece in a month. The whole point is simply to get your novel written, then worry about revision and polishing it later. He provides a lot of great tools along the way, and tells you not to get paralyzed by the so-called "rules" of fiction writing--that even the experts disagree. The only rule you must obey is to entertain your reader from beginning to end. Other "rules" can certainly help, but don't let them straitjacket your creativity or slow you down. Besides, you can always fix that stuff later if you have to (like stripping out adverbs ending in "-ly," or removing all semicolons to make your sentences faster and more punchy, stuff like that).

Misleading Title, and Probably for Novice Writers

I received "Write Your Novel" as a Christmas present because my family knows I enjoy writing flash fiction and am preparing to write my own novel. All the help I can get is a good place to start, right? I read through "Write Your Novel" in a couple days and I found it to be a collection of basic advice for writers who really don't know where to start. I thought that the chapters on how to market your book to agents and publishers was very useful, but the rest of it I found to be very basic, "101" level content.

The author spends most of the chapters showing and telling the reader how to write an outline; how to develop characters; how to write inner and outer journeys; and how to do small tricks to help the reading process move along. Most of this book was - for me - not revelation but confirmation: I'm already doing, or have already done, most of the things the author advises. Again, for folks who have no substantial writing experience and aren't sure how to "build" the skeleton of a book, I think this might be exactly the instruction they need to make their novel happen. But for the rest of us who know how to write an outline, diagram chapters, develop characters, and explore inner and outer challenges? It's probably too basic.

My chief complaint about this book is that it's misleading. The title says, "Write your novel in a month," but the author doesn't actually teach the reader to write a novel in a month; instead, the author teaches the reader to set a daily word goal and write like a crazy person in order to complete the bulk of a first draft within a month.

This book is not: "Get an idea, write an outline, do research, develop characters, write a complete first draft, edit your first draft, edit your second draft, edit your third draft, and send to an agent."

This book is: "If you already have an idea, and have already done your research, and have already developed your characters, then you can write most of your first draft in a month and at a later time go back and edit your first, second, and third drafts before you scout an agent to market your book."

So yeah, I don't think "Write Your Novel" is a bad book, I just think that the title is misleading and that it's probably written for novice writers who genuinely don't know where to begin or how to complete the writing process.

Great for writing in a month or a year

Although I am not participating in Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) or even trying to fast pace a novel, this book has a lot of valuable information and insight into getting organized in the writing process, figuring out plot and is also great for learning character development. I'm not a seasoned writer but it is something I have always loved to do. Now that I am trying my hand at getting serious and writing a full length novel, this book has been incredibly helpful.

About the Author
Pieter Slootweg (1950) graduated both in medicine and dentistry. Currently he is Professor of Pathology at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands since 2004. Before he was Professor of Oral Pathology at the University Medical Center of Utrecht since 1995. He obtained his Board Certification as Consultant Histopathologist in 1988. The mainstream of his professional career lies in the area of Head and Neck Pathology. He has published over 230 peer reviewed papers and has written, edited, or contributed to almost 20 books in this field. His research interest is in molecular biology of head and neck squamous cell cancer and its precursor stages and surgical pathology of salivary glands and maxillofacial bones.Professor Slootweg is a member of the Editorial Board of Oral Oncology, Virchows Archives, Journal of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, International Journal of Oral Maxillofaical Surgery, Pathology Research International, and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. Moreover, he is member of the WHO-IARC panel on oral carcinogenesis. Recently, he was appointed to be one of the Volume Editors of the update of the WHO classification of Tumours of the Head and Neck (4th edition).

This book does a great job at detailing one side of an anthropological issue and then juxtaposing it against the opposing argument. This set-up allows the reader to clearly get a sense of the argument and decide what view one aligns with. I purchased this book for a cultural anthropology class and found it to be a great tool in learning the material.
