Editor Bio

The Institute for New Testament Textual Research is located at the University of Munster. Their central task is to research the textual history of the New Testament and to reconstruct its Greek initial text on the basis of the entire manuscript tradition, the early translations and patristic citations. No women inventors?

I bought this book because my daughter's fifth grade class was studying inventors. I was quite disappointed to find that there were no women inventors in this entire volume! There is a chapter on the serendipitous discovery of Teflon at DuPont (and Goretex), as well of nylon -- but not of Kevlar, developed at DuPont in 1965 by Stephanie Kwolek, nor of Scotchgard, discovered by Patsy Sherman and Samuel Smith at 3M in 1952. There is a long section on computers, but no mention of Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper who developed COBOL and apparently popularized the term "debugging" (even though there are sections titled "The Entomology of Computer Bugs" and "The First Actual Bug"). I'm afraid I expected more from Ira Flatow, a respected science reporter for NPR.

Revenge of the ... well, you know...

Very good, well written book that I will read a couple more times. Inspirational in that not every world changing event was welcomed with open arms and truck loads of money being thrown at inventors... All were good examples of inventions that changed lives and made the world a better place. You don't have to be a nerd to enjoy this book, but being a person who has lab note books for everything I do, well, makes it easier to "laugh last"...

Good for what it is

None of the books (and I bought about 6) were designed for someone like me who basically drives (disabled) and stops and does a photo walk to the falls and back. There should be someone who writes for those of us who aren't hikers or professional photographers or mommies with a van full of kids. We are out there, and we at at cafe's not 5 star restaurants and not McDonald's. So, for what its worth, when in Canmore, check out Craig's restaurant, the Icefield Parkway is a breeze to drive, and ez to stop but the walks are strenuous, even the short ones, the walk from the parking lot to the falls or lake is almost straight up and down (paved), but not at all easy if you are old or crippled or like me, a bit of both. Anyway, this is your typical basic book, don't look for newsy insights, but it does give a general overview.

Awesome book. Just returned from vacation there and a young man at one of our stops said it is the bible for the Canadian Rockies. The only problem was that I bought it from a buyer for $40 and found a Goodwill receipt inside!

Robert A. Divine is George W. Littlefield Professor Emeritus in American History at the University of Texas at Austin.

T. H. Breen is the William Smith Mason Professor of American History at Northwestern University and the author of several works of history, including The Marketplace of Revolution.

George M. Fredrickson is Robinson Professor of United States History at Stanford University, and author of several books, including "Black Liberation: A Comparative History of Black Ideologies in the United States and South Africa" (1995), "The Arrogance of Race: Historical Perspectives on Slavery, Racism, and Social Inequality" (1988), The Black Image in the White Mind" (1987), and "White Supremacy: A Comparative Study in American and South African History" (1981). He was president of the Organization for American Historians for 1997-98.

R. Hal Williams is professor of history at Southern Methodist University and author or coauthor of four books, including Years of Decision: American Politics in the 1890s and America: Past and Present, now entering its eighth edition.

Boring!!!!

This book is really bad!!! Hans Holzer might have called himself the original "ghost hunter", but he is not a very good author. The book recounts the events leading up to the murder of the Defoe family, the subsequent arrest of the son, his confession, and then the trial and conviction. The title is truly misleading, because the book has nothing to do with possession. Just skip it!! There are so many other great reads about the murders in Amityville, so save your money and buy those!!! Happy Reading!!!

I love how you planned out the whole plot. It was realistic and riviting. Me and my friend are only 11 but we LOVE your book, even the movie suprised us with new horrors! Another sad chapter in the Amityville Hoax history.

To understand how this strange marriage of true crime reporting and paranormal 'research' came about the reader need look no further than the dedication to William Weber. Weber was/is the defense attorney for Ron DeFeo Jr and the key conspirator of the infamous Amityville Hoax. His greasy fingerprints are all over this book, which continues to try and build a bogus case of paranormal activity driving Ron DeFeo to kill his family. Want real facts about these murders? Go to Amityvillemurders.com, it will truly open your eyes to the deceit of the 'haunting' of the house at 112 Ocean Avenue.
The biggest danger sign that I was in for more parapsychology 'fuzzy math' nonsense came in author Holzer's foreward concerning possession. In that essay Holzer gives us two examples of possession, yet concludes with this strange statement..."What I have just mentioned are two classic cases of possession. They are not actual cases, and the names mentioned are ficitious, but I can match these hypothetical cases over and over with real stories from my files." What? Two classic, yet ficitious, cases? And if these so called classic cases are ficitious then it would go without saying that the names would be ficitious as well, would it not? Also Dr. Holzer if these bogus tales match cases from you files 'over and over' why didn't you site those, especially since you are making the sloppy arguement that DeFeo was driven by paranormal forces to kill his family? Even the excessive amount of court documents you use do nothing to back up your arguements, which are so weakly presented as to be laughable. Also your poor research in the bogus 'history' of the house is even more disappointing. All of the so-called paranormal theories have been disproved over time, but people still want to believe in them, so more exploitative trash like this book will be written and sold and read. So much the sadder for those who have truly suffered from the DeFeo murders, namely the DeFeo family. Worth reading as an example of how some heartless souls will exploit a tragedy.

A fitting tribute to one of the greatest thinkers of all time

Anyone who has taken a course in macroeconomics knows who Keynes is. Economics is full of camps, conflicting doctrines, feuds, rivalries, etc. Keynes was unique in that, unlike other economists who are indoctrinated or are in love with a theory, he was never scared of giving up an idea that did not work. If one was to read his "Tract on Monetary Reform" one might be fooled into thinking that it was Milton Friedman that was writing and not the J.M Keynes who revolutionized economic thought with his General Theory. This pragmatism is what sets Keynes apart from every other economist. But why Keynes was so different from others is something students never learn. This biography does an admirable job of tracing Keynes' upbringing, his education, career, and contributions in the light of circumstances that Keynes lived through and shaped his ideas. It is also full of nuggets about Keynes' idiosyncracies which humanizes the biography and shows the real person behind the aura. The book is long, but 63 years of action-packed life requires such detail. The Chinese say, May we live in interesting times. Keynes certainly lived in interesting times with the result that this book is just as interesting.

Serviceable

This is what you might call a nice, workman-like march through the life of JM Keynes. It was a valuable read for me because I learned and re-learned a good bit about events on the world stage from about 1910 through Keynes's death just after WWII. I also got a tangential refresher on Bloomsbury.
As to economic theory, I didn't learn much. Not at all because I was already up on Keynes and demand management and such. No, Skidelsky is not a professional economist- he does not spend his days at the university commons or the IMF cafeteria, chewing over the fundamental ideas of economic theory. So it just hasn't sunk into his bones so deeply that he can easily state the basics in clear, complete and simple terms. Of course, this may chalk up to my shortcomings as a reader, but I was motivated and re-read carefully, and quite frankly the mumbo jumbo didn't always add up.
Also, Skidelsky does spend much time thinking about Keyne's sexuality. Maybe that is a wise professional choice in that it would have required a lot of ethereal philosophising. Still, during his youth, Keynes was a committed and in many ways open homosexual. Next thing you know he marries a woman and lives happily with her for the next 20 plus years. It points up some fascinating questions about the range of human sexuality and its biological and social determinants. Skidelsky doesn't really ask them. Too bad. I mean, I ive in 2016 America when so many people easily accept the humanity of gay people, and so many others are uncomfortable with homosexuality, and so much is in flux. It would have been pretty timely but Skidelsky stays on the surface.

A Major Force with Enduring Influence

In this, the third and concluding volume of his biography of Keynes, Skidelsky offers a brilliant analysis of one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Skidelsky offers a remarkable discussion of the man (as opposed to the icon) whose influence seems to have fluctuated according to conventional (received?) wisdom with regard to fundamental economic principles. Economists have either agreed or disagreed about the value of Keynes's ideas (often with more heat than light) since the publication of his major work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money (1936). As a non-economist, I have only casually observed how his principles have gone in and out of favor as the national economy itself improves, flattens out, weakens, improves, etc. I enjoyed this book because it connected a human being with the principles to which so many others have referred in books and articles. Also because, as international trade accelerates in terms of both scope and depth (largely because of the Internet and the WWW), the role of government in each country will inevitably change...especially governments in those countries which were formerly members of the U.S.S.R. as well as in other countries in Asia, notably China. Thanks to Skidelsky's book, I am now much better prepared to recognize and understand such changes. I wish I had read the second volume in the trilogy (subtitled "The Economist as Savior") before reading this one. Those who read this review are urged to do so. However, judged wholly on its own merits, this final volume (subtitled "Fighting for Freedom") is a first-rate achievement.
