It's A Fun Read

There are superhero comic books, movies, and television shows that I would recommend even to friends with no pre-existing interest in the genre. That redefine what you think a superhero comic or cartoon can be. Or that employ the fantastic and phantasmagorical to address in metaphor the great ultimates of literary fiction.

This is not such a book.

What we have here is neither more nor less than an entertaining, well told, and engaging story. I wouldn't exactly say I came away deeply enriched by the experience of having read it, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless.

If you're looking for something a little more concrete, this is the story of an emerging teen superhero - "Invincible" - as he goes from finding his superpowers to finding his place in the world. So like I said, nothing genre-redefining, but it's a fun read. Of course, because this is an Image title as opposed to Marvel or DC, some of the places it's prepared to go are a lot darker and more violent than you're likely to find in the entrenched cosmologies of the old boys - at least in their canonical universes.

The art is simple, straightforward, and above all, uncluttered. Nothing to go into raptures about, but it does the job. Ottley, Walker and Crabtree all seem far more concerned with doing their part in telling a story than making a stylistic statement. It's at once the greatest strength and the greatest weakness of their work.

Bottom line: this is a good, solid, superhero comic. Good enough that I just ordered volumes 2 and 3. If you do love the capes and spandex set, this is definitely for you. But... if not, then you should probably just move on to the next option. Maybe a romance or a western. Or even a pirate comic.

Or whatever the Hell it is you people who don't like superheros read.

Kirkmans finest

Robert kirkman is always recognized for his comic book the walking dead with it spawning a TV show and a spinoff show which are both great I myself never miss an episode but invincible is his best work in my opinion. The series mixes great superheroics by a great assortment of characters with fantastic art (other than the first story arc and even that art is decent) that only gets better as the series progresses. Another great thing about the series is that since this is kirkmans property he allows its characters to grow and change dramatically which gets you more invested by making you feel as if you are growing with these characters from invincibles first day as a superhero as a teenager to him getting married and having a child. In conclusion this volume is a great way to get the first few story arcs under your belt for a nice low price as well as them having a wonderful shelf look when you collect and read all 10 of them.

Robert Kirkman continues to amaze.

Invincible is a super-hero title in the midst of an industry that is filled with super-hero titles. I have been reading these types of comics since I was a kid...over thirty years now...and I decided to give this a try because it had gotten so many good reviews. I bought this volume thinking I might get volume 2 in a few months or so. I was immediately hooked on this title. The art is GREAT! The writing is BETTER! This book is (in my opinion) simply put: One of the BEST super-hero books EVER written. I compare it to the original Spiderman that captured my imagination so many years ago. The story is superbly crafted and the artwork jumps off the page and explodes on my corneas! I feel I should warn against letting young kids read this title due to some heavy amounts of blood during the amazing knock down drag out fight scenes. They are depicted in grisly detail and, while very bloody, are more exciting than most comic book battles. The hero of the story is portrayed realistically and as a college freshman aged kid, he faces a lot of hard decisions. Kirkman writes it like he had lived it...it is believable and he adds just the right amount of humor. I have already told many of my friends to go pick up this title, and I would definitely recommend it. The Ultimate Collection is excellent. BIG BOLD colorful pages, nice sturdy hardcovers, and sewn bindings that let you fully open the book wide so you can see every inch of these amazing stories. These are characters that I think will stand the test of time just like Spidey or The Bat.

I bought 3 of the books and 1 workbook to lead discussion; we were doing a family discussion on it with our teenage sons. This workbook offered no questions, ideas, etc that I wouldn't come up with on my own. It is not necessary. Instead of this book, I would have your teen read (by same author) The 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make

As a high school English teacher, I find this book to be immensely helpful for my incoming freshmen. In fact, it is the first book we are reading in class. The book is interesting and well-written and the tips, topics, and exercises are very useful to this age-group. The 7 Habits are also universal, so I get a lot of insight into myself as I am discussing the book with the class.

I had a new class thrown at me, no materials provided of course. This workbook was inexpensive enough for me to buy one for all my students. Now if guidance would stop adding kids to the class I would not have to keep purchasing more....but shipping has been quick and I have never had a student waiting more than 2 days for their copy to arrive.

This is a book for all persons who dream of making a difference. It helps you get past mental models of inadequacy and then gives some explicit stories of persons who did some pretty remarkable things although they never had a title or position of authority. To lead is to serve is the major premise of the book. Belongs in the hands of every person in every community.

In a cultural climate where family and faith can be fiercely antagonized, we need more than ever to have the ability to grow strong and deep family roots into our faith. The Popcaks clearly, faithfully and practically map out how we achieve this in our families and kids. In the end, this book provides so much more to be hopeful for in our families than to be worried for.

Practical guide for raising Catholic children

Raising faithful Catholic children in today's generation is a challenging task for even the best parents. The amount of evil in the world is more visible and more accessible than previous generations. Due to the importance of this subject, Dr. Gregory Popcak and his wife Lisa have written a book entitled Discovering God Together. The book begins with an invitation, to not only pass on the Faith to your children, but to also deepen your faith in the process. It then proceeds to list the "Five Marks of a Faithful Family." They are as follows:

1. Catholic families worship together.
2. Catholic families pray together.
3. Catholic families are called to intimacy.
4. Catholic families put family first.
5. The Catholic family is a witness and a sign.

The rest of the chapters in Part One provide you with a general overview. Chapters walk us through the importance of rituals and routines, including ones for work, play, talk, and prayer. There is also a chapter on walking your children through the stages of faith, which go all the way from birth to late adulthood. Part Two of the book focuses a lot on prayer life and how to develop one as a family and also for your children. In this section of the book, there is also a chapter which speaks specifically to fathers )and mothers as well to some degree). There were some statistics in this chapter that were both eye-opening and sobering. It is the father more than the mother that will ultimately determine if their children grow up to become practicing Catholics. That's a lot of responsibility! The last part of the book focuses primarily on the Sacraments and has chapters for Baptism, the Eucharist, Confirmation, and Confession. There is also a chapter on parish life and its importance that I believe parents and priests could both benefit from reading.

The book is an easy and practical read by respected Catholic authors who know a thing or two about parenting. What I like best about this book is it is like there is a workbook built into it. There are reflection questions, a test to take, and some lines to fill out for brainstorming ideas. This is a valuable read for parents at any stage of the journey, but I would definitely recommend it most of all for new parents, because it is never too early to instill a love of God and the Church in your children.
