A disappointing book

As someone who lived through the Apartheid years in South Africa, this book looked as if it would be a fascinating read. All the blurb and the set-up suggested some very revelatory reading and I sped into the book once purchased. What a disappointment on a number of levels. Firstly the "revelations" were not really that interesting. Secondly, I found that the book did not really grapple with the moral issues which faced the author. I suspect that she does not have the intellect or appreciation of what happened during those years to really grapple with them and then express them herself. If this were so we would have found a really disturbing retrospective account of the moral dilemmas that she faced and her "baring of the soul", as promised, would have carried a level of conviction which this book never rose to.
Probably the most moving and "real" episode of her life was the writing about the loss of her child. Here I could relate to her emotions. I am afraid in the rest of the book I could not. A very disappointing experience.

Whilst I enjoyed the book

This was interesting to me, as I'm fascinated by the period. Whilst I enjoyed the book, I would have liked more about the feelings of the writer as she went from pro apartheid to against.

Worth the read and an extraordinary journey.

I would like to have seen a little more reflection (with the benefit of hind sight) on the reasons underlying Olivia's joining the security police.
