This is a very good book. I definitely recommend it. I also sent one to my daughter and she loved it as well. It was helpful to her in letting go of her home and finding a rental. Which turned out to be so much better. Myquillyn manages to be inspiring and uplifting even when going through difficult times. Really, that is what it is all about. Pretty easy to get through the fun times, right?

Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story (Music in American Life), by Diane Diekman

One of the best-known honky-tonkers since Hank Williams, Faron Young was a popular presence on Nashville's music scene for more than four decades. The Singing Sheriff produced a string of Top Ten hits, placed more than eighty songs on the country music charts, founded the long-running country music periodical Music City News in 1963, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Flamboyant, impulsive, and generous, he helped and encouraged a new generation of talented songwriter-performers that included Willie Nelson and Bill Anderson. Presenting the first detailed portrayal of this mercurial country music star, Diane Diekman masterfully draws on extensive interviews with Young's family, band members, and colleagues. Echoing Young's characteristic ability to entertain and surprise fans, Diekman combines an account of his public career with a revealing, intimate portrait of his personal life.

"Incorporating published accounts, interviews, and personal insights, this balanced book is important in keeping the memory of a chart-topping country artist alive and in putting the country music scene of the period into perspective. Recommended."--Library Journal "Finally someone's written the story of Faron Young's life, one of country music's most colorful characters."--Nashville Musician

"His is a rich story, spanning the golden age of honky-tonk, women, liquor, ruin and glory, and no small entrepreneurial spirit. . . . Diekman is scrupulous and meticulous in her assemblage of details. . . . Young's family and surviving friends seem to have given her ready access and unflinching honesty."--No Depression "Diane Diekman . . . takes us on a journey from his early life, through the recording successes, the failed marriage, the career downturn, the depression and, finally, to that fateful night . . . when he put the pistol to his head."--Country Music People

"Live Fast, Love Hard,  a sobering account of the Singing Sheriff's roller-coaster life that ended with his 1996 suicide, tells the tale of two Youngs: one, a talented, flamboyant performer and charitable man who helped the community and struggling songwriters like Willie Nelson and Bill Anderson, and who helped country music by founding the long-running periodical Music City News; the other, a raging alcoholic and jealous husband with an explosive temper, whose addiction and poor self image . . . led him to abuse and cheat on his wife, and verbally abuse his children, band members, and friends when he was drinking. . . . Diane Diekman . . . provides readers a rare glimpse inside the tumultuous life of this talented and troubled musician."--Dirty Linen

One Of The Best Biographies Ever!!! WOW!
By Frank the Biography Fan
This is one of the best biographies I have ever read about anyone. This book is very well-written, as it portrays Faron Young as a person first. Many biographies about musical artists talk way too much about the music, and not enough about the person. Faron Young's music speaks for itself. However, no one has ever known that much about his life, other than that he was a colorful character who sang country music, used salty language and drank too much. Diekman paints a much more detail picture of an outwardly simple, yet internally very complex man. As you read this book, you will feel the tremendous highs and lows that Young went through in his happy yet often painful life. You will also feel the alternating sense of fun and nervous tension that friends and family felt around him. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop. And while I like Faron Young music, I am not what one would consider to be a die-hard fan. This book took me back through Young's life, as well as the lives of those around him. It is also sad to see how such a super talent died so sad and bitter. But after reading this terrific book, I understand why he died as he did. I have read thousands of bios on everyone from John Adams to Patsy Cline. This is definitely in the top three. It is simply WONDERFUL................It reads great, and paints such a illustrative picture of a man who, I thought I knew a little about........but after reading this book, I realize how little I really knew! I'm gonna read it again, and then go out and buy some Faron Young music. BRAVO!

The Beauty of Truth
By Gary Presley
What appeals to me as a reader -- and what I admire about Diane as a writer and biographer -- is that Faron is revealed as a "man in full." Faron possessed a magical voice, a gift for entertaining, an appreciation for his artistic abilities, but he apparently was also possessed by the demons of depression.

Years of research, and a compassionate understanding of the man behind the music, gives readers (and history) a book wherein Diane examines Faron's life and death, never hiding sad truths that sometimes leave a reader reeling, but yet we know she loved and respected the man and his art.

A Man of Contradictions
By Sam Sattler
Faron Young, who is today one of the more underestimated country singers of his generation despite his long career and many hit records, was a hard man for even his friends to peg. That is because, as so aptly described by Diane Diekman in her Faron Young biography, "Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story," he was a man of strong contradictions.

Faron Young was one of the nicest men in the world but he was one very mean drunk and no one wanted to be around him when he was drinking heavily (and that was much of the time). He was extremely generous to those who had less then him (often they were songwriters on the way up, such as Willie Nelson) and were in need of a few hundred dollars to tide them over, but was known to refuse his road band the extra five dollars a day that would have made all the difference in the world to them. He loved his children and considered himself to be a good family man but he made it a point to speak of his youngest daughter as his "only little girl" and never publicly acknowledged the other daughter he had out of wedlock or how terrible his relationship with his oldest sons really was. Faron could curse like a sailor, and he usually did, but would behave respectably around the wives of his band members. He had lots of longtime friends and he had lots of longtime enemies. He was an astute businessman who made some terrible business decisions that cost him a whole lot of money.

All of these contradictions, taken as a whole, are probably why so many people explained their toleration for Young's behavior by saying, "That's just Faron." Connie Smith used those words to explain how someone with her temperament could endure working on the road with the fast-living Faron Young. And even Jean Shepard, as brash as she sometimes appears to be, finally refused to go on the road with him any longer.

Longtime Faron Young fans who witnessed him in his prime will probably still find some surprises in, or have their memories nudged by, Diane Diekman's well-researched and detailed biography. She reminds us that Faron was founder of the influential Music City News and reveals just how much personal money he put into the newspaper in order to keep it afloat long enough for it to pay its own way. Her readers also learn that he would have had more hit records, and number ones, if he had not refused to let his label use payola to move his records up the charts the way record labels bought higher chart positions for so many other singers.

And that is just the beginning of what is packed into "Live Fast, Love Hard." The book covers the childhood that may explain Faron's own cold approach to fatherhood, the national, though bogus, scandals that damaged his career, his failed marriage, and his tragic death at his own hand. About the only thing missing is a comprehensive discography of Faron's recordings, although the book does mention most, if not all, of his record albums and notes which ones include his biggest hits.

So this is a book both for those who are already fans of Faron Young's great voice and for those to whom he is hardly more than a name from country music's past. Put a copy of "Wine Me Up" on the turntable, grab a cold one, prop your boots up on the foot stool, and enjoy this book. If you're not already a Faron Young fan, you probably will be by the time you finish "Live Fast, Love Hard."

Review
This extraordinary book does three things at the same time. First, it gives simple recipes for fixing problems and explains them with exceptional clarity and insight. Second, it gives the deep technical background as to why these recipes work. Third, through the use of case studies we can all recognise it shows how the theory and practice come together and make the recipes work. What sorts of problems does it help you solve? Telescoping, starring, tin-canning, bursts, crepe wrinkles, core collapse, high-speed vibrations, gauge bands. These are just some of the defects they discuss. A book written by a professor and a consultant could be a mixture of impenetrable academic prose and frothy consultant speak. But Good and Roisum make sure that you get the best of both worlds insightful science coupled with hard-nosed reality from the shop floor. The book is a delight to read There s a bonus. The book includes a CD with a powerful winding modeller. This means that you can put in your own winding parameters and see what s going on inside your own rolls taking into account taper, nip pressure, air entrainment and thermal/hygroscopic effects. In three words: buy this book! --Professor Steven Abbott, Research & Technical Director, MacDermid Autotype

This book is a useful purchase for any engineer or technologist concerned with winding thin materials, particularly paper, film and similar products. It brings together the expertise of two world-leading experts in the field. Dr David Roisum is an inspiring teacher of winding principles and practice, and his seminars and courses are famous around the globe. I can almost imagine myself sitting in his class as I read the book! There are useful solutions to most winding problems, and the reasons why things are done are carefully explained. The sections of the book on machines and measurement especially show David s sympathy for the employees faced with turning out good rolls, of ever-changing products, on machines that may not be quite up to the job. His folksy approach and everyday analogies make this a very appealing book; although some of the technical and not-so-technical terms may mean little to those outside North America! Dr Keith Good has led the winding research at Oklahoma State University s Web Handling Research Centre for 20 years. During this time he has published many research papers, and these form the core of the section on modelling. Building on the basic calculation of stresses within a roll after winding, he has proposed and experimentally confirmed the additional effects of a contact roller, air entrainment, thermal and viscoelastic effects. He is acknowledged as the top academic expert on winding world-wide. As well as the published academic studies, he is familiar with the development work and production issues in many of the companies that sponsor the Centre: these include most of the major US firms who produce and process web materials. The key idea in the book is that the winding conditions and material properties determine the stresses within the roll during and after winding, and these determine the roll properties and whether it will exhibit one or more of a number of defects. Quality problems can often be solved by relatively simple changes to the winding conditions or equipment: there are suggestions in the book for overcoming most defects. However, the modelling of roll stresses can reduce the time taken to reach a solution; and it enables the effects of larger reels, higher speeds and new materials to be considered with a degree of certainty. This significantly reduces the risk of building equipment or running a new product on production scale. To appreciate the theory fully, graduate-level engineering mathematics is needed. However, there are sufficient explanations and figures for this section to be comprehensible and valuable for readers without that background. To perform the modelling, the book comes with WindARoll software written using Microsoft Excel® as a platform. This calculates and plots graphs of roll stresses, wound-on tension (after passing through the contact nip), torque capacity and limiting speeds for significant air entrainment and telescoping. A useful library of web material properties can be called up. Each input has a clear pop-up help comment of what is required and its significance. The book is unique in the way it applies recent academic research to solving practical winding problems. It represents a significant advance on Roisum s earlier book, The Mechanics of Winding , published in 1994. It will continue to be useful as rolls of basic papers and films are produced at higher speed and larger sizes, and novel materials such as flexible electronics, medical products and laminates are found in roll form at some stage during their manufacture. --Dilwyn P Jones, Consultant, Emral Ltd, UK

Readable and easy too understand
By P.Termaten
My two cent's

This book is a must have, if you are working in the winding industry and want to go deeper inside the winding process.
Although it is mainly focus on the paper side of winding and less on the foil
and a lot of parts in this book are common sense things I still highly value this book,
as it gives you a good inside at the whole winding process.

Best Regards,

Comprehensive but lacks some detail
By Steve Kodos
The cost indicated this might be a bit more detailed than it is. It does cover most of the subjects regarding winding but some subjects contain little detail. I my opinion a good overview of winding but not really worth the high price tag. The software supplied on disk is little more than a calculating spreadsheet and not much real use.

A true treasure I hope people will find!
By Natalie Twigg
Where The Poppies Now Grow is an absolutely beautiful book!
After reading it I felt the deep bravery of the author for facing this topic with such integrity and without judgement. Handled with such a tenderness, it felt like this would've been exactly what these WW1 soldiers would have written. A terribly complex thing so beautifully, deeply and simply put.. evocative in bringing me totally into the story. I smelled, tasted and touched the field, the tree.... each scene...

Hilary Robinson has written a true treasure.. If I was a soldier's mother and read this book, something in my soul would be ever so grateful to her.

Rubery Book Award 2015 Children's Shortlist
By Rubery Award
A picture book about the First World War for young children. Using rhymes and delicate pictures that hint at the reality without being brutal, it tells the story of Ray and Ben as they progress from children playing in a poppy field to soldiers in the trenches. It treads a subtle line between gentle story telling and harsh reality - a pleasing book with a moving message.

"I owe it to many people, and to myself, to set the record straight. There have been many versions of parts of the story in the press over the years, many lies overlaid with truths and truths overlaid with lies. Much of the truth is just a palimpsest, an echo that changes even in the act of repeating it, but this is my story."In the dying years of apartheid, a most extraordinary story hit the headlines. Agent Olivia Forsyth had escaped from ANC imprisonment in Angola. Upon her return home she was feted as a hero by the government. In a flurry of media appearances and press releases, Forsyth claimed to have infiltrated the ANC and passed on vital information. Is that what really happened? In the world of espionage, truth is the first victim and nothing is as it seems. Here, for the first time and in her own words, South Africa's most notorious female spy during apartheid lays bare the story of her life.Olivia Forsyth was also known as agent RS407, codename Lara, lieutenant in the Security Branch of the South Africa Police, ANC comrade Helen Bronson, prisoner Thandeka, alias Christine Smith.

A disappointing book
By Michael Booth
As someone who lived through the Apartheid years in South Africa, this book looked as if it would be a fascinating read. All the blurb and the set-up suggested some very revelatory reading and I sped into the book once purchased. What a disappointment on a number of levels. Firstly the "revelations" were not really that interesting. Secondly, I found that the book did not really grapple with the moral issues which faced the author. I suspect that she does not have the intellect or appreciation of what happened during those years to really grapple with them and then express them herself. If this were so we would have found a really disturbing retrospective account of the moral dilemmas that she faced and her "baring of the soul", as promised, would have carried a level of conviction which this book never rose to.
Probably the most moving and "real" episode of her life was the writing about the loss of her child. Here I could relate to her emotions. I am afraid in the rest of the book I could not. A very disappointing experience.

Whilst I enjoyed the book
By Shirley Sacks
This was interesting to me, as I'm fascinated by the period. Whilst I enjoyed the book, I would have liked more about the feelings of the writer as she went from pro apartheid to against.

Worth the read and an extraordinary journey.

I would like to have seen a little more reflection (with the benefit of hind sight) on the reasons underlying Olivia's joining the security police.

Review

The Independent (UK), 10/4/10
"There’s fierce, and there’s Edith Head. The name to drop in the golden age of Hollywood, Head was wardrobe consultant on Rear Window and All About Eve, to name a couple of classics.
This stunning new book chronicles her 50-year career with sketches and archive material."

Harper’s Bazaar, October 2010
"It’s a must-have book for connoisseurs of fashion and film alike.”

Donna Marie Smith, Palm Beach Cty. Lib. Syst., FL- Library Journal’s Xpress Review 10/29/10
"The golden age of Hollywood sparkled with glamorous stars and extravagant cinematic productions. Costume designer Edith Head won five Oscars and epitomized—along with actors she clothed such as Barbara Stanwyck, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn—the star quality of these heady days. Jorgensen (editor, Peterson's Photographic magazine) captures a behind-the-scenes look at the world and work of this dedicated, prolific artist. He includes background information and gorgeous color photographs and illustrations of the costumes she meticulously designed. While incorporating biographical information about Head, Jorgensen focuses primarily on the clothes, which perfectly personified the characters in films like All About Eve, Roman Holiday, and Sunset Boulevard.

Verdict For fans of classic Hollywood movies and students of fashion, photography, and film. Those who want a more in-depth look at the personal life of this iconic Hollywood figure should read David Chierichetti's Edith Head: The Life and Times of Hollywood's Celebrated Costume Designer.

BookPage, December 2010
“…scrupulously researched and handsomely assembled work… Filled with pithy anecdotes and never-before-seen sketches, Edith Head is the book for the costume design enthusiast.

InStyle Australia December 2010
“This lust-have new tome reveals the story behind the costumes.”

Tucson Citizen’s Shelf Life, 12/8/10
"In this beautifully executed book filled with more than 350 images, Head’s work is documented and put into historical context providing readers with a rare behind-the-scenes look at how Hollywood design evolved. This is a fascinating book which is a virtual treasure chest of film stills, costume sketches, tests, and even fabric samples. The text by Jay Jorgensen, a longtime editor for Petersen’s Photographic magazine and photo editor of Palm Springs Life, adds just the right touch."

Antique Trader, 12/30/10
“The anecdotes were so intriguing, I found myself unable to stop turning the pages. … In addition to the fascinating stories, there are page after page of stunning photos and original Edith Head costume sketches; the book is illustrated with more than 300 large, clear photographs. The large format and heavy, quality paper are a pleasure to behold. It could be classified as a “coffee table” book, but that description seems to fall short, as it offers so much more. And the presentation is attractive right down to the end papers, which are a montage of Edith Head sketches. … The book has significant entertainment and informational value; anyone who is even remotely interested in Hollywood history, popular culture or fashion will find “Edith Head” worthwhile.”

Films in Review
“The book is a treat. A spectacular repository of on-set pictures of Ms. Head at work, plus her costume designs, and even a recipe for Chicken and Potatoes Casa Ladera (her home in the 50s), we get a full-bodied picture of her career . . . . fun . . . beautiful.” Sight & Sound“This spectacular one-of-a-kind book surveys Head’s work in words and pictures, bringing together rare, never-before-seen sketches, fabric samples, costume tests and behind-the-scenes photos from the Edith Head archives.” Guardian
“[Author Jay Jorgensen’s] pictures are a revelation. He has excellent images of Head's designs, at their best when based on character rather than dazzle.” Rage Monthly
“Edith Head: The Fifty-Year Career of Hollywood’s Greatest Costume Designer is a beautifully done book. The flow of the chapters, the extensive photos comprised of stars and the costumes alone are quite remarkable and create a fascinating read for Hollywood fashion aficionados.” “Jorgensen moves through Head’s career almost on a film-by-film basis; the volume is sumptuous, but the text is also well-researched. Together with Chierichetti’s biography, the two books will stand as the definitive texts on one of the paradigmatic Hollywood careers.”

Numerous typos, grammatical errors distracting
By Mrs. Johnson
I understand that this book's attraction for most people is the photos, but I'm frankly shocked by the number of obvious typos and grammatical errors in the text--at least one on every page! I also understand that not everyone will catch a dangling modifier or even subject-verb agreement in tricky sentences, but periods next to commas? Random question marks inside words? Periods in the middle of sentences? These errors are extremely distracting to the reader. I can't believe this book was allowed to go to press without at least one pass by an editor!

If you can manage to ignore the typos, you may find the placement of images occasionally mystifying, with photos not showing up until 6 or 8 pages after the costumes were described. And while I was hoping for insight into Edith Head's character and motivation, after a certain point most of the content is devoted to a litany of costume descriptions.

Edith Head's Career Highlighted
By Ray W. Clarke
This much-awaited volume on Miss Head is an absolutely beautiful volume. I waited years to have a colossal book on her costumes much more than more information on her life which is available in other volumes.

While the book itself is a magnificent production, including the graphics, layout, photography and cover fabric, there are a few aspects that go wanting, but do not detract from anything but the highest recommendation.

I find that the pictorial coverage is most stingy with her designs for The Ten Commandments, even though the picture of Anne Baxter's elegant and stylized portrayal of Nefretiri is captured by the one and only photograph devoted to this motion picture.

Of special note is that despite the computer and editorial staff, the text which is sufficient except again for The Ten Commandments, has numerous spelling, syntactical, and possibly typographical errors. While I think nobody can attest to any accuracy regarding her early years, nor certain facts regarding her most personal interior life, the text is informative, and not burdensome in presentation of her typical daily activities. It is to the point!

It is especially a noteworthy book because we are treated to photography that we have never seen in other books about this most highly-acclaimed and most sensitive artist. While one may find that she may have been highly protective of her billing and her Oscars, one understands that it was out of necessity, due both to her formulative years and instinct to guard and protect her artistry. Had she not guarded her designs, one can only imagine that the system in which she worked could have concealed her rightful acknowledgements.

I applaud both Edith Head for giving so many of us such magnificent pleasure over so many decades, and for the author and staff who made this book happen.

I suppose any book documenting Edith Head's 50 year career in Hollywood is better than nothing, but this one doesn't even try to be in depth. It is a disappointment on a number of levels.

This coffee table book is part biography of Edith, part fashion bio of the costumes she made for films, part gossip dropper of the lives on the people she worked with. Don't be fooled by the books height or size. You aren't getting your money's worth as most of the pages are "filler."

I purchased this book back in January, but held back posting a review until I finished reading it. I kept hoping, thinking, the book would improve. But the longer I examined it, the more faults I found with it.

Firstly, Edith's name is linked to over 1000+ films; of that 500 or so, she personally designed and costumed herself. From that, we get only a scant 100 or less films. Also, for reasons I can't fathom, we are shown pictures from films Edith had nothing to do with (where she received name credit, but didn't actually design the costumes for). While it's neccesary, of course, to address the Givenchy and "The Sting" controversies, among others, it's a waste of space to include pictures of costumes she didn't design.

Compounding this problem is the many, many, many of the costumes are described and not shown. With the exception of 3-6 films, most films are alloted only 1 or 2 pictures. In addition, most of the shots are publicity shots and don't always show the costumes at their best angle to be able to study and admire the craftmanship Edith put into making them.

Then, we come to pictures of Edith. There are 20+ (I counted) pictures of her sketching or looking at sketches. One or two would have sufficed, given that NO imagination went into choosing pictures of her where her personality came through. Also, there are too many bland/boring shots of her looking blankly into camera, or posing beside someone. The author keeps telling us she had a funny, vibrant side. That her off-duty wardrobe was relaxed but stylish. But we get only a few types of pictures. The pictures of Edith chosen don't give insight into Edith as either an artist or a personality. (Hell, rather than given us 20+ pictures of Edith sketching...they could have given us instead more pictures of her costumes or the actual sketches themselves.)

Spelling and grammar are also very bad. Mistakes are on every page. If this was a well-thought out photography book, those mistakes would be forgivable. However, this book isn't even average. And the fact that book didn't go through a spell-check process before going into print makes it feel even cheaper still.

Also, Jorgensen isn't much of a writer. To make the book look like it has more substance than it actually does, the border extends an inch in, and the sentences are double-spaced. There are also many block quotes. I understand he's no fashion insider. However, his name dropping and gossipy tone about Hollywood's Who's Who doesn't contribute to my understanding about Edith. It only makes it more apparent that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

This book falls into the "What were they thinking?" category. It had such potential but it's such a missed opportunity. It's lackluster when it should be shiny. It's redundant where it should be exciting. It's dimissive when it should be awe-inspiring. If you do buy a copy of this book, I suggest you get it on bargain. Do NOT pay full price for this. It's not worth it.

Here's hoping a more thoughtful, more thought-out Edith Head coffee table book will come on in the future and replace this dreck pile.
