Gary Born is widely recognised as a leading figure in international arbitration. His two-volume work 'International Commercial Arbitration' remains the most compendious and thorough treatment in this field. Not only does Gary Born's International Arbitration: Law and Practice deal with commercial arbitrations under the major institutional rules and all the key issues they may throw up in practice, the author has also included a chapter that provides a very handy introduction to, and synopsis of, investor-state treaty arbitrations. Concise introduction to international arbitration

The reviewed book belongs to Gary Born, well-known scholar and lawyers in the field of international arbitration. It has been published after groundbreaking success of his magnum opus – International Commercial Arbitration, a book published in 2009.

That book received a lot of positive feedback. Professor Jack Goldsmith, Harvard Univeristy, wrote that this book has no parallels neither in law, practice or theory in international commercial arbitration. Professor Harold Koh, Yale University, wrote that the book is very comprehensive, accessible and full of different opinions.

The question therefore arises: Will this book repeat the success of the previous one? Before answering, we need to consider the following factors.

First of all, the Born’s masterpiece was devoted to international commercial arbitration, whereas this one is more general and encompasses such topics as international commercial arbitration, investment arbitration and interstate arbitration.

Secondly, the previous book consisted of two large volumes and encompassed almost all topics of international commercial arbitration, discussing in detail every topic, whereas in this book, Born only provides general descriptions and does not discuss in detail.

The present book is intended for those, who just started studying international arbitration. It familiarizes the reader with general concepts, doctrines, principles and rules of international arbitration. Each topic does not occupy more than half a page, sometimes less, which makes us think that it is written for those, who does not want to spend a long time for reading. It is certainly not a sole reason, for which the book is written in such a concise manner. One more reason is that Born intended to discuss and analyze all those concepts and doctrines of international arbitration, which have already been discussed before him.

The style and language is accessible and in most cases is very interesting. The book is attractive also for abundant practical examples, adduced by the author throughout the text.

One more fact has also surprised me in the book. On page 17, the author lists all prominent arbitration institutions of the world, but does not include International Commercial Arbitration at Russian Chamber of Commerce. It implies that this institution is not a leading one, even though it has strong image in Russia and CIS states. It is also a reminder that this institution is in desperate need for improvement. Not only Russian Chamber of Commerce should contribute in it, but also legal community in Russia.

Personally, I liked the book because of practicality, comprehensiveness, conciseness, clearness of ideas and concepts. Perhaps, it gave way to the predecessor, but it was not written to excel it, but to create convenience for the reader.

Excellent Book! I Couldn't Put it Down.

I had never heard of this book until a New Hampshire father was arrested after protesting it at a school board meeting. He described it as being like a "Triple X porno" and was horrified that his child's high school English class was reading it. Being the curious type that I am, I had to know what is so bad about it that someone was willing to go to jail over it. The answer is absolutely nothing. It's a riveting story about a school shooting, the events leading up to it, and the aftermath. It also touches on many other controversial issues, such as teen pregnancy, depression, bullying, domestic violence, and the price of popularity. It's told from the point of view of several parties-- the shooter, his childhood best friend who turned her back on him in order to be popular, his mother, her mother (a judge), and the detective working the case. There is a "sex scene," but it is not graphic, and it certainly does not qualify as "triple X porno." Unless your teenagers don't have TV and have never been to the movies, I doubt they'll learn anything they don't already know from the book. In my opinion, this is an excellent book for both older teenagers and adults. I read it in three sittings over the course of two days. I just couldn't put it down.

I have to say this is very different to the books I normally read, I mostly read fantasy, science fiction or thrillers but the premise seemed interesting since this is something you see often on the news.
I loved this book, there were times when it seemed to get too much into details, but I guess everything was necessary to do a good depiction of the characters and their background.
It was very emotional, I had the chance to get a side of the story you never get from the news, you always think of the killer as a monster, you never think that on the bottom there is a person that might have been under a lot of stress, we never think of the things that might have taken them to that extreme, and I am not condoning murder, I am just saying, you never think of them as human beings.
Furthermore, this book gives you not only the killer perspective but also their parent’s perspective and it was tough! To think you could be so blind and know so little about your own children. To be the parents of a murderer, to love and hate someone at the same time, to get all the backlash from your kid’s mistakes.
You also get flashbacks from when Peter was just the sweetest kid and how the abuse escalates and gradually changes him. How he had to endure all kinds of cruelty even from his own brother and lose his only friend. How clueless his parents were all the time and how the chain of events unravel until the day he explodes. And the worst part is that this is not fiction, not even exaggerated, this is actually a reality, there are a lot of Matt Roystons and a lot of Peters out there….

Nineteen Minutes is a book over a highly controversial topic: bullying and school shootings. As I read the book, I experienced mixed emotions about the topic. I do see how the book is very informative but I also feel as if it could have put a bad influence on high school students, as it could trigger someone’s emotions-considering the similarities in the book and our school; specifically the name: Sterling High School.
This book is overall a good read through the many good examples of different situations relating to bullying that could potentially happen at the high school level. Although we, as a student body, may not know if one of our classmates is in this state of mind, they very well could be. There are of course bullies in our school, as there are in every school; even if we won’t admit it, our school is not perfect even if we want to think it is. Another student in our own English class could be in this mental state and reading this book could have triggered their emotions, maybe not to physically bring a gun to school and use it, but it could have sent them into a deeper state of depression.
On the other hand, Nineteen Minutes is an overall informative book. As Jodi Piccoult asks, “If you gave someone your heart and they died, did they take it with them? Did you spend the rest of forever with a hole inside you that couldn't be filled” (Jodi Piccoult)? This, to me, is a very inspirational quote that Jodi said. I believe that this could change many people’s views on this book if they found it to not be one they enjoyed. It almost contradicts what I previously stated my views are on this book, but I do see both sides of the argument.
Another view I have about Nineteen Minutes is that it could potentially strengthen someone if they are in a bad state of mind. If their self esteem is at a low, there are several pieces of information and quotes throughout that could help bring your mood up, one of my favorite being, “There are two ways to be happy: improve your reality, or lower your expectations” (Jodi Piccoult). This, to me, is very inspirational because within the quote is real life advice that could potentially change how you live or how you go about things.
All together, I believe this book was average as it did have possible effects on today’s teens or society.

Reliability at Its Best

Author Joe W. McPherson received his Ph. D. degree in physics from Florida State University; and he has been with Texas Instruments since 1980. He is now Texas Instruments Senior Fellow Emeritus. He has 150 publications in the field of semiconductor reliability. He applies science to reliability problems to solve them.

Throughout the book, the author tries to give examples for reliability issues for pipes, tires, turbine blades, but without question, the primary thrust of the book is semiconductor reliability. The chapters deal with device degradation and fitting degradation data; statistics (Normal, Lognormal and Weibull distribution); failure rate; accelerated degradation and modeling, ramp to failure test, and TTF models for semiconductor circuits (this being the condensed version of Dr. McPherson's work), mechanical reliability issues and conversion of dynamic stress into static equivalent.

There are plenty of examples (with realistic experimental data) in each chapter to illustrate how to fit data, how to construct the statistics and calculate statistical variables; how to accelerate degradation and to project to use conditions for exponential and power law models; analytical formulas for ramp testing establishing effective time at fail stress level for exponential and power law models. TTF models for semiconductor circuits chapter include electron and stress migration and their relation to grain boundaries and conductor geometries; corrosion and exponential corrosion model with RH%; thermal cycling and associated crack propagation - plastic deformation and corresponding Cofin-Manson model; Time-Dependent Dielectric Breakdown (TDDB) - E, 1/E and 1/SQRT(E) models are discussed and compared for lifetime projections; Mobile Surface Inversion, Hot Carrier Injection and Negative Bias Instability are also discussed. Mechanical reliability issues - most with semiconductor reliability issues in mind - are discussed in a separate chapter: bonds and Mie-Gruneisen potential, ionic bonds, elastic and inelastic behavior of metals, grain boundaries, fracture strength, creep and fatigue.

The book has a laser focus and clarity and does not degenerate into abstract academic discussions other than what is necessary for understanding issues at hand. The reader can follow up with the references and McPherson's publications - which have the same clarity and notation system that the book does. I highly recommend the book especially for those with a generic engineering background who deal with reliability - for them the book is going to be an eye opener.

The second edition has great color illustrations

The second edition has great color illustrations. This is a no-nonsense presentation of Reliabilty Physiscs, Statistical Distributions, etc. I would only wish for a more in-depth analysis of how to use Weibull or Log-normal distributions to for area scaling, and detailed comparisons of different wear-out distributions. It is an excellent text.

This is an excellent Reliability Student's textbook with plenty of examples throughput the book and problems with answers at the end of each chapter. It is also an excellent reference book for the Reliability Professional with all the necessary equations, explanations, failure mechanisms and citations. I will be constantly referring to this book in my daily work as a Reliability Engineer.

An Important Resource for Learning Diagnostics

I work as a child psychologist, where mental health diagnosis plays a big part in my daily role. I also teach DSM/diagnostics to graduate level graduate students. For me, these casebooks are extremely helpful, both in my role as a diagnostician, as well as in my work as an instructor.

This book doesn't go into much description about DSM, the process of diagnosing, or treatment. Thus, you will need to have a copy of DSM 5. Unlike previous editions of the DSM case studies, these are organized by diagnostic category [e.g., Depressive Disorders, Somatic Symptoms, Sleep Disorders, etc.] and there is a brief description of what symptoms/characteristics these entail.

For the most part, this book is a collection of vignettes [103, if I counted correctly]. Some are relatively easy and straight-forward [e.g., Jane was referred for an urgent psychiatric consultation after she told her roommate that she was suicidal], while others are much more complex [e.g., Sally presented to a psychiatrist as part of a court proceeding that was intended to legally reassign her gender to female]. The goal is to get you to think about the symptoms being presented and for you to formulate your diagnostic hypotheses.

With many of the vignettes, you are left with more questions than anything, as these descriptions are brief. Unlike your more typical case study, you aren't provided with extensive information about the person's family history, prior mental health background, treatment history, etc. When that information is included, it is done so to help you come up with the accurate diagnosis, particularly in situations where time-lines, family history, or prior history must be taken into account. For teaching/learning purposes, however, this is ok. Most of these vignettes are only a page or two, with the goal of highlighting key characteristics of a particular condition.

The case studies presented are relatively diverse. Some are made up and some appear to be genuine cases. At the end of each, there is a brief description of what the diagnosis is, or what the diagnosis will be in the future in the symptoms persist. The discussion is tied directly to DSM, telling you which diagnostic criteria the person meets. When applicable, a discussion of differential diagnosis is included.

Consistent with the philosophy and model of DSM, this book doesn't give treatment recommendations. Therefore, if you determine that Client X has an Alcohol Use Disorder, ADHD, Persistent Depressive Disorder, and/or Antisocial Personality Disorder, you need to decide what to do next on your own [e.g., individual therapy, marital counseling, medication, group therapy, etc.]. The book will not guide you in this regard. What is helpful, however, is that all of the vignettes have 'Suggested Reading' at the end, should you want to learn more about a particular condition.

Even if you have a solid command of diagnostics, this is a good book to have. This is especially true as we try to learn about the changes in DSM 5 and what this means for our work.

Excellent for learning to think inside the test paridigm

As an LPC who was warned about the importance of learning how to take the lpcc exam, I decided to purchase this book.
It was initially suggested that I use a particular online subscription service and I did utilize the free trial, however I knew I wanted something to make me think from the perspective of an outpatient counselor. Having spent 3 of my 4 years diagnosing and treating inpatient sub-acute clients with SPMI's intertwined with substance abuse issues, the order in which I diagnose is often inverse of the usual decision trees. When taking the online practice exam, I usually arrived at the correct diagnosis, but lost many points on the earlier question.
So, I knew that I had to retrain my brain to think the way we learned in grad school. This book was appealing to me because it offered extensive explanations for why an answer is the best choice. Also, being a book I wasn't constrained to learning within the subscription period.
I loved this book and found that it helped me a great deal.

In this meandering tale of an extraordinary woman's life, Clark (Eriksdottir; Swimming Toward the Light) strives to give everyday existence a magical aura, with mixed results. Aurora is a delightfully quirky child, who seems to embody the unusual circumstances of her incredible journey. She has white hair, is never cold, gambols barefoot where others hesitate to tread, loves nature and has a special affinity for animals. The small community in the valley of the Drook, where the St. Croix family lives, looks upon her as of another world. Even Tom Mulloy, the man she comes to marry, sees her as "a fairy maid." The book shifts from Aurora's story to that of her children: Nancy, a headstrong woman who wants to be everything her mother isn't, and Stanley, a late bloomer who overcomes personal tragedy and retains his mother's passion for exploration, becoming a deep-sea-diving expert on ice. It is Nancy's daughter, Sheila, who unravels Aurora's mysterious past and links her to a family that set out on the Titanic for a new life in America. Clark captures the stark magnificence of Newfoundland and portrays a changing world as technology and civilization make indelible marks on a fading seafaring era. Labored prose and overdetailed storytelling weigh down the tale, but Aurora's story will please those with an interest in northerly lands and Titanic mythmaking.

One morning in 1912, Newfoundland fisherman Francis St. Croix finds a baby floating on a chunk of ice. When no one claims her, he takes her as his own and names her Aurora. Her mysterious origins plus her white hair and her eyes, one blue and one brown make people suspicious. But as the years pass she gains acceptance, marries lighthouse keeper Tom, and has two children whose lives reflect the social, cultural, and political developments in Newfoundland. Daughter Nancy leaves home for the city of St. John and has an affair with one of her instructors that results in a child and then marriage, and son Stan becomes a scientist studying ice. It is Nancy's daughter who finally solves the mystery of Aurora's heritage. Clark (Victory of Geraldine Gull) weaves Newfoundland traditions, shipwrecks, and the barren, ice-covered landscape into the ebb and flow of the lives of her characters as they experience the Depression, war, and the Sixties to create a story of an outsider's gradual acceptance of and by a community. In a novel as subtle as the working of water on ice, set in a place in the North Atlantic known as the Latitudes of Melt where icebergs dissolve, Clark reveals the life of Aurora St. Croix, who was discovered as an infant on an ice pan off the coast of Newfoundland, and explores how families, emotions, and countries are lost, found, or sometimes simply melt away. Clark writes for both adults and children, and the fancy found in tales for the young shapes Aurora's childhood as she wanders the barrens, runs into fairies, and takes up residence with a fox family. As odd as that may seem in a novel that tackles the confederation of Canada, the prejudice of Protestant families in Ireland, and death in any number of manifestations, it's just that juxtaposition of the fey and the mundane that moves the novel forward. Lush with the revelations of many characters and the richly described landscape of Newfoundland, Clark's tale exposes the daily struggle to build a life and cope with its inevitable dissolution.
